Cathay Pacific further cuts capacity in Hong Kong

Cathay Pacific releasing its annual results earlier, Cathay Pacific said it would further cut capacity as demand continues to fall in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.The Hong Kong-based carrier, which has been among the airlines hardest hit by the virus, said it has reduced capacity across its network by 65 per cent in March and April.

This is compared to earlier plans for a 40 per cent cut, and comes as the virus takes a further toll on passenger demand.“Travel demand has dropped substantially, and we have taken a number of short-term measures in response.
“These have included a sharp reduction of capacity in our passenger network,” Cathay Pacific chairman, Patrick Healy, said.The airline has been at the forefront of a global slump in travel demand due to the epidemic.

Losses compound a hit the airline took in the second half of 2019 from widespread anti-government protests in Chinese-ruled Hong Kong. As a result, Cathay also unveiled a 28 per cent drop in 2019 earnings - to HK$1.69 billion (£168.80 million). The flu-like coronavirus has infected over 100,000 people and killed more than 4,000 globally.




Even as the outbreak appears to come under control in China, with the number of new cases falling, Cathay predicted big losses in the first half of the year. “Despite these measures we expect to incur a substantial loss for the first half of 2020,” Healy added.Cathay did not announce any job cuts and said it was cautiously optimistic about the air cargo market, where rates have risen sharply in recent weeks.“We continue to take delivery of new aircraft in 2020 and, with the hope that the environment will improve, we will retain the flexibility to add back capacity to the market as soon as we are able to,” Healy added.

“Our plan to take delivery of 70 new and more fuel-efficient aircraft by 2024 remains unchanged.”Cathay said it had unrestricted liquidity of HK$20 billion.

The airline said it expected to remain a going concern given the availability of sources of funds and its cost-cutting measures, including a hiring freeze, a request for three weeks unpaid leave for all staff and stopping non-essential spending.

What factors lead a plane to crash and not glide?


Let's  start off by explaining some basics on airplane stability. A plane in the air is continually being subjected to forces such as rising hot air, up and down drafts, turbulence, gusty winds, etc. These disturbances cause the plane to be thrown off the course in the air. How the plane reacts to these depends to its stability.

Hence stability in a plane means the ability of the aircraft to remain in a straight and level upright flight and to return to this position, if displaced, without any corrective action by the pilot.

Stability may be longitudinal, lateral, or directional depending on whether the disturbance has affected the body in the pitching (nose up or down), rolling (wings banking left or right), or yawing (nose moving left or right) plane.



Generally airplanes are designed to be nose heavy (longitudinally stable) when correctly loaded. This design feature ensures that, in the event of engine failure, the airplane will assume a normal glide.

Most planes glide well. For example, an Airbus A330 can glide without engines for about 160 kilometers from a height of 40,000 feet! This was proven when, in 2001, an Air Transat (a Canadian airline) plane ran out of fuel due to a ruptured fuel line while flying from Toronto to Lisbon in Portugal. The pilots made history by flying the plane without power and gliding to land safely on an island in the Azores region in the Atlantic Ocean. (Read an article in my website here )

In this example, the pilot was able to handle the plane and landed the plane safely without engines. This was possible because at the time of the engine failure, the plane was still stable and the forward speed was above stalling speed. However, even if the plane had stalled, the chances of the plane recovering to normal speed are good in a conventional nose-heavy plane.

There are many reasons why some plane crash. They are mainly damages caused to the plane’s flight control that made it impossible to stay in the air.

However, among the main causes, one of them is insufficient air speed (because the plane had stalled) to provide lift to keep the plane flying. Nevertheless, the higher the plane, the better it is because the potential energy at high altitude is then converted to airspeed, and hopefully recover it from the stalled condition.





One exception is the Airbus A320 Hudson River crash where Capt Sully was able to glide the plane from a low altitude of 3000 feet to ditch on the river safely in January 15, 2009, saving 155 lives.

176 killed after Ukraine International Airlines Plane Crash

All 176 people on board a Ukraine International Airlines flight were killed when it crashed shortly after takeoff from Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran, the country's state-run Press TV reported.
The Boeing 737 jet took off early Wednesday morning with 167 passengers and nine crew on board, Press TV reported, citing Ali Khashani, a senior public relations official at the airport.
Earlier reports from Iranian state media had said 180 people were on board.
    Emergency crews were dispatched to the crash site but could not assist because the area is currently ablaze, said Pirhossein Koulivand, the head of Iran's Emergency Medical Services. Koulivand told state-run media outlet IRINN that the crash site is between the cities of Parand and Shahriar.
    Flight-tracking service FlightRadar 24 said in a tweet that the jet had been in service for about three and a half years.
    Iran's semi-official news agency ISNA reported the crash was due to technical difficulties.
    A Boeing spokesperson told CNN they are "aware of the media reports out of Iran and we are gathering more information."

















    The crash takes place just days before the company's new CEO David Calhoun will formally take the job. Calhoun replaces Dennis Muilenburg, who was ousted in December after Boeing's disastrous year.
      The American aviation giant is still reeling from the aftermath of two 737 Max crashes, which killed 346 people. The Max has been grounded worldwide since March, and the company has struggled with delays and other issues in its bid to get the planes back in the air.

      Cockpit Challenges


      I was recently asked to identify the most difficult aspects of handling a plane. I think a more interesting question would be which of the three main manoeuvres – taxiing, takeoff or landing – is the most challenging.



        
      The truth is that there is no definitive answer; different pilots find each of these three phases of flight challenging in different ways, and this is largely influenced by the pilot’s personal flying experience, the type of aircraft he or she is flying, as well as environmental conditions. In fact, an airline, general aviation or helicopter pilot would justifiably have different views.

      From my perspective as an airline pilot, the answer is most certainly the landing aspect of the flight. Let me elaborate on the three phases – taxiing, takeoff and landing – and the unique challenges each poses.

      TAXIING FOR TAKE OFF

      It is a common perception that a flight begins with a takeoff and concludes with a landing. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The fact is that a flight actually commences at the parking bay, from the moment a plane taxis on its own power right up to takeoff, and only concludes after it lands on the runway in its intended destination and taxies to its parking bay.

      A good taxi is smooth and follows the centre line of the taxiway or runway. Big planes such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 have cameras to guide them. Smaller aircraft, however, lack this luxury and in the absence of technical visual assistance, pilots have to rely on their own expertise to remain centered on the runway and anticipate turns on the ground.

      Taxiing in poor visibility is often an uphill task for a pilot. I once landed in Zurich, Switzerland, in bad weather conditions and had to request for a ‘Follow Me’ truck to guide me to the appropriate parking bay.

      When the weather is good though, taxiing a plane is relatively easy. The captain merely turns a tiller (steering wheel) with the left hand at low speed, and then transfers to using the rudder (a control surface, similar to that used to steer a boat) pedals with the feet to maintain the centre line of the runway during takeoff.





























      UP, UP & AWAY!

      The takeoff phase begins when the thrust levers (throttles) are applied, and the plane starts moving at a high speed and lifting off the ground. Large jet engines are very powerful, and normally, a reduced takeoff thrust is used to prolong engine life.

      During takeoff, the plane accelerates to a lift off (rotation) speed prior to getting off the ground. The term ‘rotation’ is often used because the aircraft pivots around the axis of its main landing gear while still on the ground. The nose is then raised (rotated) to increase the lift generated by the airflow across the wings.

      The speed needed for lift-off is relative to the motion of the air. For instance, a headwind reduces the ground speed needed for takeoff, as there is greater flow of air over the wings. Typical takeoff air speed for jetliners, depending on the weight, is in the 130 to 155 knots (150 to 180 mph or 240 to 280 km/h) range.

      There are three important speeds that a pilot needs to take note of during takeoff. The first is the decision speed – this speed, in effect, marks the point after which an emergency stop is no longer possible, and the plane is committed to continue with the flight. So, if the pilot, for any reason, makes a decision to abort the takeoff, it must happen before the plane reaches this speed.

      The second is the rotation speed, whereby the pilot moves the flight control slightly back towards him or her in order for the plane to lift off the runway. It is important for the pilot to precisely determine this speed; if a plane is rotated too early, its tail may scrape the runway.

      The third is the safety speed; this is the speed at which the plane is able to become safely airborne even in the extremely unlikely event of engine failure. It needs to be emphasised that takeoff is a very safe procedure. The captain’s training requires that he or she knows exactly what to do based on the speed that the plane has attained, and as a stringent backup measure, engine failure exercises are frequently practised in the flight simulator.



























      AND WE HAVE TOUCHDOWN

      Generally, landing a plane is trickier than taking off, as there are many variables present in the environment. For instance, if the plane is estimated to land on a wintry day with poor visibility due to fog, a pilot has to plan for an automatic landing.

      An auto landing, which is always monitored by the captain, is a very safe procedure as the flight computer guides the plane all the way till touchdown. An auto landing system is capable of landing the plane safely in very low visibility and cloud ceiling. In fact, without automation, many airports would be closed for landing during winter when foggy conditions are prevalent.

      Landing a plane in windy conditions is a challenge for the best of pilots, and is therefore restricted according to the strength of crosswinds, which may cause difficulties. For example, for the Airbus A330, a limit of 40 knots is imposed for landing. And even within this limitation, strong crosswinds necessitate skillful handling by a pilot when landing a large aircraft. The pilot must make use of the rudder to keep to the runway centre line.

      During touchdown in a cross-wind landing, the pilot then removes the drift (an effect caused by the wind blowing from the side) that the aircraft has been maintaining, in order to line up with the runway. Managing this manoeuvre during the landing stage requires expert coordination.

      Another situation that tests a pilot’s skills is landing in high altitude airports. An improperly executed approach in this kind of airport can result in a hard or heavy landing, which will require that the aircraft be examined thoroughly to determine if repair or maintenance work is required. In one incident that involved a heavy landing in a remote high altitude airport, where the necessary maintenance was not available, the plane had to be flown back to the main airport with its landing gears extended! This was a pricey affair, as it not only involved repair costs, but the return flight with gears extended caused the plane to burn more fuel!

      UNPREDICTABLE AS THE WEATHER

      At the end of the day, whether the takeoff or landing is trickier greatly depends on the conditions that exist at the given point in time.

      A manual landing is certainly more challenging, owing to variable environmental conditions, and while no commercial airliner is capable of taking off automatically, the landing can definitely be carried out entirely by automation. And if the destination airport is equipped with auto landing facilities, then, the plane’s inbuilt automation makes the touchdown a piece of cake!

      Airlines are fully aware of the challenges faced by pilots, and safety being their number one priority, ensure that pilots receive intensive training in flight simulators and are always on top of their game.

      For me, landing is my favorite part of a flight, as it means that I’ve safely flown my passengers to their destination. My daughter, on the other hand, loves takeoff, when the engine hums, building up into a crescendo, as a burst of power accelerates the plane into the sky!

      AVIATION JARGON


      Crosscheck? Ramp? Ground stop? Who comes up with these things?


      Finally, decoding the insufferable jargon of air travel :) 

      THE EXPERIENCE OF AIR TRAVEL IS UNIQUE in that people subject themselves to a long string of mostly anonymous authorities. From the moment you step through the terminal doors, you’re hit with orders — stand here, take your shoes off there, put your seat belt on, do this, put away that — and a flurry of information. Most of it comes not face-to-face, but over a microphone, delivered by employees, seen and unseen, in a vernacular that binges on jargon, acronyms, and confusing euphemisms. There are people who make dozens of air journeys annually and still have only a vague understanding of many terms. To help, I’ve compiled a glossary, focusing on those expressions most easily misunderstood, or not understood at all. In no special order:

      • DOORS TO ARRIVAL AND CROSSCHECK
      Meaning: Occasionally heard as “disarm your doors and crosscheck,” and announced by the lead flight attendant or purser as a plane approaches the gate. The intent is to verify disarming of the emergency escape slides attached to the doors. When armed, a slide will automatically deploy the instant its door is opened. Disarmed, it needs to be deployed manually. On departure the slides are armed to facilitate an emergency evacuation. (You might hear this as “doors to automatic.”) Upon docking, they’re disarmed to keep them from billowing into the boarding tunnel or onto the apron during servicing.
      Crosscheck is a generic term used by pilots and flight attendants meaning that one person has verified the task of another. In the cabin, flight attendants crosscheck one another’s stations to make sure the doors are armed or disarmed as necessary.

      • ALL-CALL “Flight attendants, doors to arrival, crosscheck and all-call.”
      Meaning: Often part of the arming/disarming procedure, this is a request that each flight attendant report via intercom from his or her station — a sort of flight attendant conference call.

      • LAST MINUTE PAPERWORK “We’re just finishing up some last minute paperwork and should be underway shortly…”
      Meaning: Everything is buttoned up and the flight is ready for pushback. Then comes the wait for “last minute paperwork,” which winds up taking half an hour. Usually it’s something to do with the weight-and-balance record, a revision to the flight plan, or waiting for the maintenance guys to deal with a write-up and get the logbook in order.

      • FLIGHT DECK
      Meaning: The cockpit.

      • FIRST OFFICER (also, COPILOT)
      Meaning: Second in command on the FLIGHT DECK. The first officer sits on the right and wears three stripes. He or she is fully qualified to operate the aircraft in all stages of flight, including takeoffs and landings, and does so in alternating turns with the captain.

      • FLIGHT LEVEL “We’ve now reached our cruising altitude of flight level three-three-zero. I’ll go ahead and turn off the seat belt sign…”
      Meaning: There’s a technical definition of flight level, but I’m not going to bore you with it. Basically this is a fancy way of telling you how many thousands of feet you are above sea level. Just add a couple of zeroes. Flight level three-three zero is 33,000 feet.

      • HOLDING PATTERN
      Meaning: A racetrack-shaped course flown during weather or traffic delays. Published holding patterns are depicted on aeronautical charts, but one can be improvised almost anywhere.

      • GROUND STOP “Sorry folks, but there’s a ground stop on all flights headed south from here.”
      Meaning: The point when departures to one or more destination are curtailed by ATC, usually due to a traffic backlog.

      • EFC TIME “Good news, we’ve been given an EFC time of 30 minutes after the hour.”
      Meaning: The expect further clearance (EFC) time, sometimes called a release time, is the point at which a crew expects to be set free from a HOLDING PATTERN or exempted from a GROUND STOP.

      • WHEELS-UP TIME
      Meaning: Similar to the EFC TIME, except it refers to the point when a ground-stopped plane is expected to be fully airborne. The crew and ground team must be sure to get the flight boarded and pushed in order to be at or near the runway as close to this time as possible.

      • AREA OF WEATHER “Due to an area of weather over New Jersey, we’ll be turning southbound toward Philadelphia…”
      Meaning: This typically means thunderstorms or a zone of heavy precipitation.

      • AIR POCKET
      Meaning: Colloquial for a transient jolt of turbulence.

      • FINAL APPROACH “Ladies and gentlemen, we are now on our final approach into Miami.”
      Meaning: For pilots, an airplane is on final approach when it has reached the last, straight-in segment of the landing pattern — that is, aligned with the extended centerline of the runway, requiring no additional turns or maneuvering. Flight attendants speak of final approach on their own more general terms, in reference to the latter portion of the descent.
      • THE FULL, UPRIGHT AND LOCKED POSITION
      Meaning: Upright.

      • TAMPERING WITH, DISABLING, OR DESTROYING “Federal law prohibits tampering with, disabling, or destroying a lavatory smoke detector.”
      Meaning: Tampering with.

      • THE OFF POSITION
      Meaning: Off.

      • FLOOR AREA“Please check the floor area for any personal items before deplaning.”
      Meaning: The floor.

      • DEPLANE
      Meaning: Deplane is used to describe the opposite of boarding an aircraft. There are those who feel the root “plane” should not be used as a verb, fearing a chain-reaction of abominable copycats. Imagine “decar” for getting out of your car, or “debed” for waking up. In fact, dictionaries date “deplane” to the 1920s, and while it’s not the slickest sounding word, I’m known to employ it myself. Like “stewardess,” it’s a term of occasional convenience. There are few snappy, PA-friendly options with the same useful meaning. “Disembark” is the most elegant one, and it’s rather clumsy.

      • DEADHEAD
      Meaning: A deadheading pilot or flight attendant is one repositioning as part of an on-duty assignment. This is not the same as commuting to work or engaging in personal travel.

      • EQUIPMENT “Due to an equipment change, departure for Heathrow is delayed three hours.”
      Meaning: An airplane. (Is there not something strange about the refusal to call the focal object of the entire industry by its actual name?)

      • DIRECT FLIGHT
      Meaning: Technically, a direct flight is a routing along which the flight number does not change; it has nothing to do with whether the plane stops. This is a carryover from the days when flights between major cities routinely made intermediate stops, sometimes several of them. Most airline staff are smart enough to realize that if a passenger asks if a flight is “direct,” he or she wants to know if it stops, but check the fine print when booking.

      • NONSTOP
      Meaning: That’s the one that doesn’t stop.

      • GATEHOUSE “If there is a passenger Patrick Smith in the gatehouse, please approach the podium?”
      Meaning: An idiosyncratic way of saying the gate area or boarding lounge. Gatehouse has a folksy touch that I really like. They should use it more often.

      • PRE-BOARD “We would now like to pre-board those passengers requiring special assistance.”
      Meaning: This one, on the other hand, has no charm. It means to board. Except, to board first.

      • FINAL AND IMMEDIATE BOARDING CALL
      Meaning: A flamboyant way of telling slow-moving passengers to get their asses in gear. It provides more urgency than just “final call” or “last call.”

      • IN RANGE “The flight has called in range, and we expect to begin boarding in approximately 40 minutes.
      Meaning: This is a common GATEHOUSE announcement during delays, when the plane you’re waiting to board hasn’t yet landed. Somewhere around the start of descent, the pilots will send an electronic “in range” message to let everybody know they’ll be arriving shortly. How shortly is tough to tell, as the message is sent prior to any low-altitude sequencing and assumes no inbound taxi congestion. What they’re giving you at the gate is a best-case time for boarding. As a rule of thumb, add twenty minutes.

      • RAMP “We’re sorry, your suitcase was crushed by a 747 out on the ramp.”
      Meaning: Ramp refers to the aircraft and ground vehicle movement areas closest to the terminal — the aircraft parking zones and surrounds. In the early days of aviation, many aircraft were amphibious seaplanes or floatplanes. If a plane wasn’t flying, it was either in the water or it was “on the ramp.”

      • ALLEY “It’ll be just a second, folks. We’re waiting for another aircraft to move out of the alley.”
      Meaning: A taxiway or passageway between terminals or RAMPS.

      • APRON
      Meaning: Similar to RAMP, above, this is basically any expanse of TARMAC that is not a runway or taxiway — i.e. areas where planes park or are otherwise serviced.

      • TARMAC
      Meaning: A portmanteau for “tar-penetration macadam,” a highway surfacing material patented in Britain in 1901. Eventually it came to mean any sort of asphalt or blacktop. You hear it in reference to airports all the time, even though almost no ramp, apron, runway or taxiway is actually surfaced with the stuff. Real tarmac becomes soft in hot weather, and would turn to mush under the wheels of a heavy jet. (I think of Paul Weller’s invocation of “sticky black tarmac” in the gorgeous Jam song “That’s Entertainment!”) Like many words, it has outgrown its specificity, and there are linguistic traditionalists who are bothered by this. I am not one of them.

      • AT THIS TIME “At this time, we ask that you please put away all electronic devices.”
      Meaning: Now, or presently. This is air travel’s signature euphemism.

      • DO “We do appreciate you choosing American.” Or, “We do remind you that smoking is not permitted.”
